A | Colombo, Oct 11 (UNI) Some 99,000 tonnes of crude oil has been held up from unloading for nearly three weeks because Sri Lanka does not have dollars to pay for it, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The Island newspaper quoted the Power and Energy Ministry as saying that the ship carrying crude oil has been anchored near the Colombo Port for more than 20 days due to non-payment of $7 million or more than Rs. 2,500 million.
The ship has to be paid 150,000 dollars a day as demurrage, the daily. The ship containing Ural crude oil arrived in Sri Lankan waters on September 20.
Sri Lanka is battling its worst economic crisis since 1948 that has led to major shortages of even essential goods.
